On November 26, Vancouver City Council will make their final vote on a motion to bring back fracked fossil gas heating in new buildings. This would reverse years of progress in a city that’s known for climate leadership, and would put future generations at risk!
In 2020, Vancouver passed a law requiring zero-emissions heating and hot water in new buildings. Their climate leadership paved the way for cities across B.C. to do the same. But in July 2024, Ken Sim’s ABC party brought forward a surprise motion to re-introduce fossil gas heating in new buildings.
Burning fracked fossil gas in buildings is responsible for 57 per cent of Vancouver’s carbon emissions. Switching to electric heat pumps is an affordable way to slash pollution and keep buildings cool in the summer. Research shows clean energy heating systems cost the same or less to build and operate than gas furnaces.
Allowing gas back into Vancouver’s building code is a backward step that risks our climate goals, the city’s reputation and our health. Join us in calling on Vancouver City Council to keep fossil gas out of new buildings and vote NO to “Recommendation B” in the City Report “Allowing Gas Heating and Hot Water in New Construction”. Together we can protect the Climate Emergency Plan from industry lobbyists!
