I just signed a petition calling on the B.C. government to ensure that all new buildings in B.C. come equipped with electric heat pumps and induction stovetops.

FortisBC’s “natural” gas that they pump into our homes is actually fracked methane gas that is accelerating the climate crisis. Methane warms the planet 84 times faster than carbon dioxide and when it’s burned, it emits carcinogenic benzene and asthma-causing nitrogen dioxide.

Burning it in our homes is completely unsafe with gas stoves estimated to cause 1 in 8 cases of childhood asthma. Using it to heat our homes instead of electric heat pumps when gas use accounts for 11% of our province’s total greenhouse gas emissions doesn’t make any sense.

Please join me in telling the B.C. government to update the provincial building code to ensure that all new buildings come equipped with electric heat pumps and induction stovetops so that we can speed up the transition to clean electric homes.
